Private First Class Sakharov (Russian: Рядовой первого класса Сахаров; Japanese: サハロフ上等兵 Saharofu jōtō-hei) was an ex-VDV soldier, Soviet-Afghan War veteran, and member of Hotel Moscow. One night, he and Corporal Menshov went to the Caribbean Bar to collect that night's earnings and had a fatal encounter with Hänsel and Gretel.

Appearance[]

Sakharov was an adult Russian man with short blond hair, a skinny build, and pale skin. In the anime, he wore a grayish-green suit and pants over a gray-blue dress shirt, whereas in the manga his dress shirt had a plaid pattern. He used a Tokarev TT-33 pistol for a firearm, and in the beginning of the anime, he was also seen carrying an Ingram MAC-10 submachine gun.

History[]

Sakharov was an ex-VDV soldier affiliated with Balalaika's paratroopers and Hotel Moscow. Balalaika had a deep camaraderie with him, and he tried to cheer up Balalaika after they were discharged from the Soviet military and immediately after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Around that same time in 1992-1993, Sakharov gladly joined his comrades in following Balalaika to their next battles, becoming members of the global Russian crime syndicate Hotel Moscow.[1]

Black Lagoon[]

Only in the anime adaptation of this arc, Sakharov was seen standing guard during the exchange between Balalaika and Kageyama at the port, and Sakharov stood next to Kageyama's car until he left.[2]

Chase for ring-ding ships[]

After Chen's plan to kill the Lagoon Company failed, he tried to flee Roanapur but before he could leave his place, Balalaika and her men, including Sakharov, entered his room and captured him, beating him up and tying him to a chair with an explosive near him. At sunset, Sakharov stood with Menshov near his car as Balalaika called Dutch about Chen's fate and detonated the explosive in real-time, killing Chen.[3]

Rasta Blasta[]

When Balalaika decided that she would return a favor to Dutch by deploying her Vysotniki to stop Roberta's rampage in Roanapur, Sakharov was seen following her and Boris into the hallway as Balalaika's men prepared to follow her orders.[4]

Bloodsport Fairy tale[]

For the reason of collecting the night's receipts, Sakharov went with Menshov to the Caribbean Bar, where they encountered Hänsel and Gretel. They knew about assassins' presence in town because of six recent murders, but they had no idea that the assassins were children. As Sakharov asked the bartender how the night went for him, the twins came up to Sakharov and Menshov and asked to play with them in an eerie voice, freaking them out. When Hänsel grinned and pulled out his ax, Menshov loudly warned Sakharov. As Sakharov pulled out his firearm, the boy sliced his hand off before he could fire a shot. While profusely bleeding, he struggled to grab his weapon and was murdered by Hänsel throwing his ax down onto his head. In the chaos, Sakharov's partner Menshov was shot in the legs and abducted to be brutally tortured and then killed by the twins.

The next day, Balalaika learned about the details of Sakharov's death that night from Chief Watsap. After finishing her talk with Watsap and getting into her car, Balalaika said that she would avenge her comrade Sakharov and stop the killings.[5] Later another night after deducing the twins' identity, Balalaika summoned all her men and declared that Sakharov and Menshov were irreplaceable brothers in arms, proclaiming that they would use their AK rifles to kill the twin children.[6] Accordingly, Balalaika successfully lured Hänsel into a trap and watched him bleed to death after being sniped, successfully avenging Sakharov.[7]

Shaitane Badi[]

In the first light novel Shaitane Badi, Sakharov rested with his fellow soldiers around a campfire in Salang Pass during the Soviet-Afghan War in the new year, remarking that he wished to have some pelmeni since he had not eaten any in three years. Conversing with Stanislav Kandinsky, Sakharov asked him if all other Sámi people were expert marksmen like him.[8]
