Eagle Hunting and Hunting Eagles is the fifth episode of the Black Lagoon anime. It originally aired in Japan on May 6, 2006.

Summary[]

The Black Lagoon manages to evade the TOW missiles, but the neo-Nazis send a team underwater after the painting. Inside the U-boat, Rock and Revy locate the painting but argue over the morality of searching for more loot.

Plot[]

The Black Lagoon evades the TOW missiles, but Dutch and Benny can only observe the neo-Nazis on the White Heather from a distance. Below the ocean surface, inside the U-boat, Revy detonates an explosive to create an opening into the submarine. Rock does not expect the explosion and is pulled by the current, and Revy quickly seals the entrance to prevent more water flooding the wreckage. He complains that she did not warn him about the explosion, prompting Revy to remind him that they cannot talk underwater. As he tries to stand up, Rock feels something and realizes that he has grabbed a human skull, freaking him out. On the other hand, the nonchalant Revy emphasizes that they are in a graveyard and notes the bones all over the place. Shining her flashlight in one area, she tells Rock that no one remembers the victims, kicking one of the skulls and admitting that she does not enjoy such places.

Walking into another area, Revy suggests finishing the job quickly since they will run out of oxygen soon. Feeling uneasy, Rock asks Revy what she thinks the men were thinking during their final moments. Bluntly answering that she does not know, Revy reasons that people die how they die, advising Rock to think happy thoughts rather than gloomy ones. The two pirates come across the blood-stained barracks and notice the corpses and their positions, indicating a shootout. In a flashback, the infuriated Spielberger shoots Wentzel H. Ahbe in the head, killing him instantly. He puts his pistol to his head as another sailor comes by and sees what just happened, insulting the SS officer for the wanton murder. Turning around, Spielberger shoots the man, alerting the other sailors on board. A couple of sailors, including Fritz, shoot at Spielberger but get fatally wounded in the process as they exchange gunfire. One man manages to shoot Spielberger in the chest, but the SS officer continues to shoot at them as he bleeds to death.

Back in the present, Rock takes Ahbe's hat and notes that it belongs to the boat's captain. Examining Spielberger's skeleton, Revy wonders if he has an Iron Cross because such items are valuable as profitable artifacts. Noticing the SS insignia on his uniform, she also wonders what happened to cause the gunfight. Rock guesses that panic must have been the root, but Revy laughs it off and deduces that the SS officer started the fight, which resulted in the sailors fighting back to avenge their captain. Reexamining Spielberger's skeleton, Rock notices the painting "Twelve Knights Led by Brunhilda" under his body, pleasing Revy. Subsequently, she orders him to secure it while she checks the rest of the submarine, confusing Rock. Revy clarifies that they need to make use of their trip by grabbing the other valuable items from the skeletons, and she begins surveying the boat. Staying behind alone in the barracks, Rock feels uncomfortable about the situation. Seeing Fritz's skeleton, Rock asks him not to look at him weird since he disapproves of Revy's actions as well.

At the same time, Dutch and Benny observe White Heather from a distance of 5,200 yards. On the large ship, Blitz Stanford orders the neo-Nazis to listen to their leader, Rachmann. Addressing his men, Rachmann gives a grandiose speech about how their group, the Aryan Socialist Union, will reclaim what was supposedly stolen from them as a result of meddling from "Zionists and Communists" during WWII. He compares their salvage mission to an act of great patriotism that will restore the "racial hierarchy to the way it was meant to be." As his men perform the Sieg Heil, Rachmann proudly informs Kruppen Feller that he has been chosen to lead the diving team. Both men cry with joy as they believe the mission is of great sacrifice. Rachmann then orders their anthem to be played, and the neo-Nazis begin singing and marching. A distance away, Benny relays to Dutch that the men are holding a march. Commenting that the leader must be quite the fool, Dutch asks Benny what he thinks as a white man of such a display. Replying that such machismo does not suit him, Benny smilingly reminds him that he is Jewish, which Dutch admits he has forgotten. In response to Dutch's question about Rock and Revy's tracking beacons, Benny says they are still in the submarine and can only pass time by picking at each other's politics.

Upon seeing the neo-Nazis deploy a diving pod into the ocean, Benny becomes worried and asks Dutch what they will do. Dutch reminds him that the enemy has TOW missiles, reluctantly admitting that they have no choice but to wait. Soon, Revy returns to the barracks and happily tells Rock that she has scavenged the remaining goods, showing him her bag. Feeling questionable, Rock recommends that she leave the medals behind, annoying her. She reminds him that they are pirates, but Rock claims that his disapproval is not because they are stealing but rather, the medals were earned by the soldiers and thus they cannot take away items from the dead. Smoking a cigarette and sitting down, Revy decides to recall her own story to Rock. Grabbing a skull and a medal, she rhetorically asks him what the two items are. When he speaks about the skull and medal as literal objects, Revy asserts that the items, according to her, are merely things. She elaborates that stripping the items of their meaning reduces them to things and re-giving value to them is determined not by memory but, by money, something that many agree on.

Hearing her state that the items have no sentimental value, the displeased Rock asks her if money is her god. She calmly retorts that money is power, stating that it is more useful than God. Remembering her childhood, Revy tells him that God and love were always unavailable to a young Chinese girl like herself while growing up in a poor neighborhood. She admits that she believed in God until the day that the police beat her up within an inch of her life for something that she did not even do. In hindsight, Revy declares that she can only rely on money and guns to get by in the world. Feeling awful, Rock apologizes, but Revy insults him and denies that she was looking for sympathy, adding that she would have given more colorful details if she wanted sympathy. With a dead glare, she warns Rock not to act like the rich balding men and rich women who are hypocrites. Finishing her point, Revy threatens to kill Rock if he ever preaches to her again about what is right and wrong. Speechless, Rock nervously agrees, but they are interrupted by a faint explosion. Rock is concerned, but Revy prepares her rifle and suggests that he hide to avoid being hit by bullets. The neo-Nazis enter the area, causing Rock to count their numbers by their footsteps. Revy in turn counts the men by hearing the guns on their belts.

Attacking the men by surprise, Revy begins shooting at the men, killing one neo-Nazi. She orders Rock to get the painting while Kruppen Feller orders John to get to the other side. As he runs, Rock trips and lets the painting fall to the other side of the hall, forcing Revy to cover him. Although Revy kills John, Kruppen Feller takes the painting and quickly escapes to the diving pod, ordering Streicher to hurry without concern for their other comrades. In response, Revy throws a grenade, causing the U-boat to quickly flood, so she orders Rock to get moving. Meanwhile, in the communications room of Black Lagoon, Benny sees that Rock and Revy's beacons have activated. To his shock, he realizes that both pirates are moving straight up toward the neo-Nazi mothership. Dutch shares Benny's worry but tells him that they cannot go charging in and can only hope that Revy has not attempted to attack.

While being raised to the ocean surface, Kruppen Feller confirms to Stanford that they secured the painting but adds that they were not alone. Consequently, a machine gunner waits for the pirates to emerge. Shooting at the two divers outside the pod, Revy then emerges and is met with heavy gunfire, causing her to shoot back. Suddenly, Rock pulls her into the water to prevent her from futilely shooting further. Thinking that the pirates were killed, Kruppen Feller cheers as Rachmann insults the pirates for thinking they had the right to the painting. Looking at his monitor, Benny notes that Revy and Rock are moving southeast away from the ship, with Dutch specifying that the mothership is moving away. At sunset, Black Lagoon picks up Revy and Rock, with Dutch and Benny learning that the painting was taken. Hearing Revy wonder who the enemy is, Dutch mentions the neo-Nazis and declares that their job is not finished yet. Revy requests to get revenge on the neo-Nazis, with Dutch agreeing and reasoning that it is also bad business to fail their job. Rock and Revy exchange an uncomfortable look, and nighttime soon approaches.
